LÛZ

Red Deer and StructureMode, Cambridgeshire, UK / Nevada, USA

Lûz is an architectural art installation that has been installed at the Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire, UK (2013) and Burning Man Festival in Nevada, USA (2014). Lûz was designed and developed by the multidisciplinary collective Les Méchants: StructureMode (designers and structural engineers), Hortense Duthilleux (artist), Digital Artists (lighting designers), and Red Deer (architects). Our role was to project manage, fabricate and lead the on-site installation of the structure.

To produce Lûz, we worked with our specialist partners at Advanced Plastic Technologies, who laser cut components from 35mm thick acrylic. These components were carefully drilled by hand in our studio to enable easy on-site assembly using a specially designed bolting system.

The structural steel beam foundation was designed in collaboration with Structure Mode and constructed in our metal workshop. The patterned plywood floor, which was a central feature of Lûz 1.0, was also fabricated and finished in-house before being fitted with lighting sensors ready for installation.
