Viewing Device for the Planet

Simon Faithfull, Cambridge

We were approached by the artist Simon Faithfull to create this 26-foot wall frieze for a public art commission installed within the new Nuffield Hospital in Cambridge. The fabrication of this ambitious piece was managed by Weber Industries from design development to on-site installation.

Working from the artist’s drawing of Carcassonne, a hilltop town in France, our design team developed a CAD file in preparation for each pixel to be laser etched into the bespoke black walnut veneered panels. Our partners at graphic imaging company Fine Cut undertook the laser-etching, before our team began the meticulous task of individually setting 30,000 punched stainless steel tiles (fabricated by BC Fabrications) into the frieze by hand.
