Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses is a haven of nature, horticulture and community spirit at the heart of Brockwell Park in south east London. In 2021, we were approached by Measur to facilitate the design development and construction of a new timber-frame barn conceived by architects Feilden Fowles.
This important development of much-loved landmark has created new event spaces, a teaching kitchen, and fully accessible facilities.
Working within a strict budget, our team developed a fabrication design that fulfilled the architect's vision and foregrounded the needs of the community. Our construction methodology for the barn was designed with economy, efficiency, and environment in mind. We worked closely with Structure Workshop to engineer simplified foundations and prefabricated components, which could be finished in our studio and delivered to site.
The structure and exterior cladding were completed in 'green' douglas fir, which was sustainably sourced from Wales. The plywood-clad interior and polished concrete floor creates a clean, minimal space that is a blank canvas for the community to make their own.
Since opening to the public, Brockwell Barn has hosted workshops, supper clubs and concerts. It is also a popular venue for private hire.
With our studio less than five miles from Brockwell Park, and with many of our team living locally, this is a special project for us – being one of few that we get to visit whenever we like!
