This design object, fabricated by Weber Industries for David Elia, draws inspiration from the designer’s native Brazil. A mirror polished medical trolley frames the main feature of the piece, which consists of four hundred scalpel blades – painted in reference to the Brazilian flag – set into translucent silicone.

Realising our client's desired aesthetic required extensive material experimentation. For the final piece we used silicone with a platinum content, which was chosen for its authentic aesthetic and archival stability.

The placement of blades was randomised using the 3D design programme Rhino and parametric software plug-in Grasshopper. Precise slots were laser cut into acrylic sheet by our specialist partners at Advanced Plastic Technologies to allow the upright blades to be encased in the silicone mix. The finished scalpel sheets were fitted into the shelves of the medical trolley and housed in two bespoke glass boxes that were designed and fabricated in our studio.
