The You In Us - Doors

Lydia Ourahmane for Chisenhale Gallery, London

We were approached by Chisenhale to support the development of ambitious new work by artist Lydia Ourahmane for her solo presentation at the gallery. Seamlessly installed on the threshold of the main gallery space, these sulphur-blackened silver doors were a feature piece in the exhibition.

The artist envisaged that over the course of her show, the touch of each viewer would gradually polish back the blackened surface to reveal the silver underneath. Taking this concept as a starting point, we worked closely with our specialist partners at Fox Plating to develop an experimental finish for the doors.

In our studio, two large brass-clad wooden doors were fabricated before being sent out for plating. A bespoke frame was produced to fit seamlessly into the gallery's interior doorway. Concealed double action swing hinges facilitate interaction with the audience as they enter and exit the exhibition.
