Cornerstone

BB Contracts and Holland Harvey Architects for Tom Brown, London

We were approached by our longtime partners at BB Contracts to fabricate this curved feature kitchen unit for Cornerstone, a new restaurant in Hackney Wick opened by chef Tom Brown.

In-house CAD modelling facilitates detailed fabrication design

Working with the concept design by  architects Holland Harvey, our team developed detailed CAD models and material specifications.  The final fabrication design incorporated Richlite, a recycled paper composite, which fulfilled the architect's vision of a 'black monolithic' design object while also meeting the client's demand for a hardwearing structure.

All components for the main unit were CNC-machined, including ribbed Richlite panels to facilitate the production of accurately curved surfaces

In our wood workshop, curved elements were formed by laminating plywood sheets, before the custom-machined Richlite panels were adhered to the surface.  Suspended steel shelves were fabricated in our metal workshop and finished with a black topcoat.

Before installation on site, the completed unit was fully assembled in our studio for finishing.  The Richlite surface was hand finished with a hard wax oil, offering protection while maintaining the quality of the material over time.  This unusual open kitchen forms a central feature of the newly opened Cornerstone restaurant.
