Jesmonite Casting Workshop

South London Cares, London

When a member of our team introduced us to the work of local charity South London Cares we were keen to get involved.  South London Cares aims to draw communities together, and to reduce isolation and loneliness, particularly amongst older people and young professionals.  Inspired by a number of  recent client projects working with Jesmonite, we developed plans to host a casting workshop at our studio.  This wonderful group of older neighbours certainly gave our team an afternoon to remember!

The workshop began with an introduction to the studio.  Over tea and biscuits, our team demonstrated how Jesmonite could be mixed to produce a marbled effect before everyone got stuck into the casting process.  Participants were invited to select their own colour combinations from a range of pigments.  Preprepared moulds allowed everyone to pour five unique circular coasters.

While the Jesmonite cured, the team demonstrated how our CNC machine had been used to cut plywood parts to produce a coaster holder.  Over more tea, participants glued up their boxes and finished them with wax.  The coasters were then demoulded before being backed with felt ready for use at home.  At the end of the session participants could choose to swap coasters to create a rainbow set, or simply enjoy the colourway that they had created.
